Toby // ‘Fantastic Feminism’ was an illustrated essay exploring the limited and often regressive portrayal of gender in fantasy illustration. Muscle bound, hyper-violent men and slim, hypersexualised women permeate fantasy illustration. Gender, its performance and its subversion are under explored and near absent within the genre.
Through these images I hoped to provide an alternate voice. The illustrations were inspired by Baroque portraiture, like that of Velázquez and Rembrandt, in the hope of appropriating the legitimacy and credibility of the genre. Using this appropriation, the portrayals of fantasy characters outside of gender norms were lent credence.
