After the release of the book 50 Shades of Grey in 2012, the online sex toy retailer Lovehoney experienced a sales surge of up to 235% from people snapping up everything from butt plugs to ball gags.
Although popular culture has been gradually changing the public’s attitudes to sex toys over the last 15-20 years, the 50 Shades of Grey series gave people permission to do something different – it was acceptable to read in on the bus or in a cafe.
This series, my Major Project, shows the possibilities for what happens to these sex toys once they make it into peoples homes; do you keep your vibrator in your bathroom cabinet, or your ball gag with your ties, or is a cactus shelf the best place for a butt plug?
I have sought to normalise sex toys, break the taboo that they should be hidden or put away in a bottom drawer, and by placing them in various domestic environments, I want people to see that it’s perfectly acceptable to use a cock ring if you run out of napkin rings.
