Култура – Bulgarian for ‘culture’ – “that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.” (E.B. Tylor)
This is a project that explores the effect, predispositions and limitations that cultural norms impose upon an individual. While culture is presented as an indelible part of one’s identity, the focus of the project falls on the many cultural aspects’ abilities to morph, reform and adapt – thus supporting my belief that human nature is not a rigid form. Many of the topics are inspired by the reality of our time – a rapidly expanding and diverse multicultural society. Some examples of the themes I explore are preservation of cultural identity in a multicultural society, subcultures, cultural appropriation, social media generation, cybercrime as a phenomenon of the western world, “socialising” stereotypes and more.
