Poisonous plants of the UK

Annie Bushnell is a Level 6 BA (Hons) Illustration student at Arts University Bournemouth whose work work tends to focus on natural history. Her most recent project  was about poisonous plants in the UK – here’s what she has to say about her work:

Do you know whether there are poisonous plants growing in your garden or surrounding area? Poisonous plants can be found growing nearly anywhere, because of their beautiful deceiving looks must people just mistake them for general plants without realising the sometimes fatal danger they have on both humans and animals.

Within this project I looked at Botanical illustrations, both old and contemporary as well as looking at the conventions of the Botanical illustration, paying attention to composition and design. I illustrated a selection of poisonous plants considering all of above. I focused on digital methods rather than my preferred traditional approach as it was easier to get bright and bold colours that draw viewers in, while still representing these illustrations as scientifically accurate as possible.

These illustrations and more will be used in my Pre Major unit, where I will put them into a zine format, providing facts and information as well as visually interesting imagery, to educate all audiences.
