Victoria Coombs is a Level 6 BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design student. Her design of a ghost costume was photographed by Kaśka Trajdos, the make up was done by Natalie Boyles and Hannah Spogis; Sarah Allerton is the model.
The brief was to design a Ghost costume for a short film from the script I had been given. These photographs are the result of my Ghost costume design brought to life in collaboration with talented make-up artists, model and photographer. I wanted the Ghost to look like she was from another world and slightly floating, so as to give her that extra supernatural feeling. So I designed her with many layers to the costume, using a corseted waist to accentuate the mass of layers of lace, chiffon and netting used for the skirt.
The base of the costume being the costume (dress) from the origins of the character as she turns into her supernatural self to link them together. Keeping to the emptiness and hollow existence the colour of black provides for the Ghost’s costume mixed with the blood significance of red, gives the Ghost her deadly look. I love to use little hints to the character’s background within the costume; the sign of the devil embroidered into her corset like a branding, and necklace she still wears as the Ghost showing her being locked into her fate no matter what form she takes.
